Nov 20 2006 * Wild Dog chase and kill Impala

With the fire season gone and the great rains we’ve had over the past month, the Pilanesberg has been a feast for animal lovers and photographers. Not only with the lush green grass that is covering the park, but the animals noticed a change in season and their activity promised some great sightings!

Wild dogs killed an impala at the Tshepe and Nkakane road junction and had nearly demolished the carcass when a brown hyena tried to steal a hind leg from the remaining pieces. The wild dogs were having none of that and the hyena had to leave with nothing to show for his efforts but a few wounds and bruises!

A lone cheetah was spotted walking down Kukama, sprayed some trees disappearing into the bush again.

Most of the buffalo sightings occurred in the north west of the park and which came down to drink every day at the 5 water holes and dams in this area, but it was at Thlou dam were they were spotted more often.

Other sightings included, but were not limited to the following:

· Elephant

· Lion

· Leopard

· Rhino

· Wild dogs

· Klipspringer

· Steenbok

· Red Hartebeest

· Baboons

· Vervet monkeys

· Blue wildebeest

· Springbok

· Kudu

· Tsessebe

· Hippo

· Waterbuck

· Zebra

· Impala

· Giraffe

· Warthog

· Mongoose

Many thanks and kind regards
